BYOT flourishes at Clayfield College!
Technology is used everywhere in our world today and it is evolving at a very rapid pace. Increasingly, technologies are mobile, personal and interconnected.
At Clayfield College, we believe that we should play a role in teaching our students to use the technology appropriately.
As educators, we believe we have an opportunity and indeed duty to our students to ensure we are preparing them for their future. Our goal is to provide extensive opportunities to use technology across the curriculum and to guide students' skill development so that they will be productive and responsible digital citizens.
Rather than banning students' own technology, we are embracing the opportunities to merge these technologies with our school devices to enhance teaching and learning at Clayfield College.

After a period of research, consultation and trials in several areas across Years 1-12 throughout 2012, BYOT was officially launched at Clayfield College in January 2013.
In 2014, our BYOT is now well established from Years 1-12 with an increasing range of opportunities emerging all the time.
All students from Year 1 to 12 could bring in their own technology from home to enhance their learning opportunities. While there is a predominance of iPads in the Early Years - this is a reflection of the devices already owned by this age group, and the simple, intuitive nature of this tablet. There is also a very wide range of quality learning apps available for this age group.
We do also have a small but increasing selection of Android and Windows tablets beginning to arrive, some iPad minis and as well as Windows and Mac laptops.
Other mobile devices that may be used at specific times could include ipods, DS devices and smart phones. The teachers will let students know ahead of time when these are an option for the learning activity.

There are three levels immediately available for BYOT use at Clayfield College:
During the first year, Junior Schooling students introduced BYOT on one day a week that selected by their core teacher. This assisted both students and teachers to navigate their way through the various organisational and technical procedures including logging on to the College BYOT WI-FI, connecting to our network via the Oracle VDI app. We certainly tested our system during this time!
Before long, many of the class teachers were ready to expand their use of BYOT to additional days. Our older students in Junior Schooling are well on their way to normalising digital technology within their classes with students now invited to bring BYOT every day.
BYOT in Junior Schooling Classes was being used by approximately 50 -60% of students during our first year.
In 2014 it is currently around 80% of students and climbing.
- Device only: the student is able to use the programs or apps that are on the device. To assist, Core Teachers identified key ares within each unit that would be enhanced by BYOT and compiled a recommended list of programs and/.or tablet apps (mostly free) for students bringing BYOT that would be used in class each term in addition to our school based technology.
- Online resources: Students were able to use selected resources from the internet under the guidance of the teacher. These included Literacy Planet, The Learning Place, student research sites, online dictionaries
- Accessing the Clayfield College Network: Students are able to log into our school network via the Oracle Virtual Desktop app, which is available to use on iPads, android devices, Macs and laptops. Students are then able to access all of the school programs and files no matter what device they are using.
